How to Study EMBRYOLOGY / Fellowship in Embryology?

In this article, we’ll be mentioning about embryology. How do you study this beautiful subject? It’s probably one of the most interesting subjects in medical school and I was able to get a pretty awesome prof for this class.
It’s actually one of those subjects that needs a lot of imagination and visualisation because it’s a lot of development, it’s a lot of progression, it’s like a timeline. So, we want you to just remember those words. So, the books that you need for this subject are Langman’s Embryology, KLM Embryology or the small book High Yield Embryology.
So, when we say you need a Langman’s and KLM, we mean you can choose between either or. Both of them work fine. Our university used KLM to make its lecture slides and had a bit of testable material on there so we decided to go with KLM but we know KLM’s Langman’s is just as good.
We would say Langman’s is a little more simplified, like just a tiny bit more and KLM is much more detailed and it also has clinical pages so those are really awesome and then for the review book we used High Yield Embryology which by far is the most conceptual review book that I’ve seen in all of my, you know, medical school books. It does have a bit of extra, you know, clinicals that you don’t need to look at or, you know, think too much over because this is a USMLE prep book so, you know, it’s totally up to you for you to ignore those clinicals on there. Now, studying the subject effectively involves a bit of a process actually because the subject is very heavily based on understanding how the human body is made in the uterus.
Embryology is the bedrock of reproductive medicine and assisted reproductive technology (ART), which entails an extensive knowledge of developmental biology, fertilization, embryonic development, and laboratory techniques. At Medline Academics, we present some of the best Embryology Courses in Bangalore that will help you become an embryologist through a curriculum that encompasses theory as well as practical learning. Through our systematic program structure, students learn various concepts and techniques involved in embryology through lecture-based classes, visual learning, diagrams, flowcharts, case studies, and laboratory learning. Under the mentorship of expert faculties and specialists in the industry, students are taught how to comprehend the developmental timeline, embryo derivation, lab techniques, culture of embryos, cryopreservation, quality control, and application of ART in fertility treatment. Whether you are a life science graduate, fertility practitioner, or simply someone passionate about the field of fertility, Medline Academics can help you establish a brilliant career in embryology with the Fellowship in Embryology.
So, watching an introductory video felt always like the thing that helped me and so I would watch maybe a lecture video, whatever types of videos that help you. There’s tonnes of animations. I found animations, especially clay model animations, 3D animations.
Those were probably the best animations to watch for embryology honestly and I did that a lot for my CVS module so when I was studying the heart embryology it was really helpful to look at, you know, videos like that because they were also very engaging as well. So just looking at content to prep your brain for the nitty-gritty information because once you have the big idea or the big concept, it’s easier to fill in the bits of information into that puzzle piece, into that, you know, huge puzzle. So, the next step I would give is either read through Langman or Kalem.
This is totally up to you. I know a lot of people aren’t textbook folks so if this is something that just finds that’s just super ineffective for you, maybe use these textbooks as reference books, as books that you read, you know, when you don’t understand something and use something else to actually understand the real topic. So that’s if that made any sense.
You’re not always going to have things in chapter format in your textbook, like you’re not going to be able to find everything in a specific chapter, right? So it’s, a lot of times you’re going to have to go to the index and, you know, use and search for that topic with a specific keyword. So this is important for medical students because not every medical school curriculum is the same and these differences have to be noted for so this is why we really try to force that mentality that textbooks are not a fallback. They are not your dependents.
You should always be seeking out different resources for information, for your understanding, for, you know, making your like learning experience better.
So the other thing I do for most of my classes is I read through lecture slides for any additional information that I’ve missed out on and usually not always do I actually find information but for smaller subjects like orthopaedics, you know, if you have something like that in first year you know a little bit of fractures you might not be able to find all that information in like your anatomy textbook, right? So you’re gonna have to go onto the lecture slides, see it and what I would do so I wouldn’t forget that information is I would turn it into an Anki card, a simple Anki card.
Obviously Anki cards you can overdo them so please be careful the types of questions you put onto your Anki cards. So like I said in the previous slides discussing and teaching is really an effective way and strategy to learn and to actually test yourself because sometimes we are not able to pick up on the mistakes that others are able to for us. So really forming a good study group or even finding a study partner.
I don’t even think you need a group to really study well. I feel like partners allow for more of an intimate experience so you’re able to really ask questions more often and it’s just a really good way to study. It’s more interactive, it’s a little less boring and you guys can both motivate each other so there we go.
You know there’s a lot of benefit to that but particularly for embryology I found this super effective because I could really test my own knowledge of the subject. And so, I think we are wrapping up the video but you have to read through clinicals in KLM and what I would do to those clinicals is I would turn them into Anki questions but I would not do that for all clinicals. I would do that for the clinicals that show up in my lecture slides.
So, things that are testable will show up on your lecture slides so make sure to pay attention to them. Don’t just ignore them. I do think there is some you know value in lecture slides so make sure to just read over them for things that you may have missed out on and turn it into a quick Anki card.
So embryology like I mentioned in the beginning is a subject that is really based on how well you were able to track events and you know what is the derivative of you know let’s say thing A you know so these this is this is something important to know about the subject is that there’s a lot of things happening all at once a lot of processes and you need to be able to keep track through maybe like a timeline in your head and really understand when different things happen and this is something you can turn into an Anki card right so when does the development of the upper limb happen so what week is that and so really having that timeline I guess not mentality but the idea that there is a timeline of events it’s really good to enforce that into your studying. Making Anki cards for things you can forget so for example derivatives of the aortic arches you know like I said weeks and days of development knowing what develops from what you know there’s there are certain things that you do need to know and sometimes you will forget them so it’s good to turn them into Anki cards and maybe things like congenital heart defects which are very important so turning a couple of Anki questions out of that and the last tip I would I would recommend is use high-yield embryology for studying during your finals if you have additional information that you can add on there I always like to recommend people to annotate in their review book I didn’t do that personally but I do feel like it would have merit because it would just be one review book that you’re looking over for each subject and you’re not going to be all over the place and so this allows for a little bit of a stress-free environment and better studying and that’s why I found I think this would be something effective that I would recommend you try so obviously this is just a really rigid study method that I’m recommending doesn’t mean it has to work for you everyone has a different style so make sure to really learn do the whole trial and error process and learn you know how best you can actually study so this is really an experience it’s something that you learn from your mistakes so don’t be afraid to you know dive into something new dive into a new study technique first year is all about experimentation.
Mostly Indian students do read I.B. Singh being an Indian author, but it is an amazing book. Gold standard is a standard textbook to look into, to look up to, when you have a PG exam, like you will find all the answers here. So, I will suggest that you follow Ninja Nerd, but if you are having trouble understanding the content of foreign YouTubers, so you can refer to this as well. Make sure you are making notes, make flowcharts, keep looking at it many times, so that your work can be very easy during the exam. So, you know, make notes in the form of asks in the exam that has the tendency to be asked in the exam.
